Upcoming family workshops

Just a reminder of the upcoming family workshops shared last week….

At Robert Munsch P.S. we continue to dedicate our efforts to support the community as a whole. One way we do this by creating continued partnerships with community agencies to bring awareness of resources and information.

Kinark a local agency who supports children with autism has generously offered to conduct two parent workshops in the learning commons of our school. The first workshop will take place on Wednesday, February 15th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. This workshop will cover Undesirable Behaviour. The second workshop will take place on Monday, February 27th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The topic of this workshop is Developing Social Skills.

Below is an overview of each workshop:

Understanding and Managing Behaviours

This session will provide an overview of the basics to understanding behaviour. The importance of defining behaviour and identifying the purpose of behaviour in an effort to reduce undesirable behaviour will be covered as well as how to reward and increase desirable behaviour. This session will be delivered by ASD Consultants from Kinark’s School Support Program who specialize in supporting children with challenging behaviour.

Developing Social Skills

This session will provide an overview of social challenges of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as provide strategies to address these social challenges. Examples will include how to promote family involvement in teaching social skills to a child with ASD. This session will be delivered by ASD Consultants from Kinark’s School Support Program who specialize in supporting children with underdeveloped social skills.

**NOTE: While the workshops will have an ASD lens, the strategies could be applied with children with social challenges without an ASD diagnosis as well. **

Should you be interested in attending one or both of these workshops, please complete the form sent home with your child or let Mrs Abalos know via e-mail

Sincerely

Mrs. Abalos

Reminder: Well being workshop next week

We still have spots available for our well being workshop hosted by Michelle Cassidy. Please see our flyer for more information. Having seen Michelle Cassidy before, I can say she is inspirational and thought provoking. Our school council chairs and myself also had the chance to see Michelle last fall and we all agreed that having  her host a session for our community would be important.

I encourage as many families as possible to join us for this event.

Hoping to see many families next week.

Mr. Collins
