- Primary choice happening on Day 4s
- Sign Language Club happening on Day 3s
- Chess Club happening on Fridays
- Eco Team happening weekly
- And starting next week….Rhythm Kids for grades 2/3. First meeting is on Wednesday.
We have also enjoyed spirit days and some special celebration events for Lunar New Year, Thai Pongal and Black History Month. We were also honoured that three of our students won the Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Poster contest and were recognized this January.
I want to thank our staff for all their time and efforts on these activities which are in addition to all the wonderful work within their classrooms each day. I have noted the impact of all of this on student well being at recesses. We know that unstructured times present challenges for our early learners and our staff have really considered different opportunities to support student learning and well being both inside and outside the classroom during our school day.
Just as the students are learning, so too are our staff. Our staff have been engaged in collaborative inquiry into the three board focus areas of math, modern learning and mental health. Yesterday, 10 staff participated in learning with one of our board’s consultants in the area of mathematics. We also have a group of teachers who received funding through the Ontario Teacher’s Federation to support their learning in mathematics. We have also have a working group of 12 staff members exploring learning with an emphasis on modern learning and outdoor learning. Finally, a group of educators are about to begin a book study on the work of Stuart Shanker and an online webinar course on self regulation. These learning opportunities are all in addition to the different learning staff engage on individually throughout the year.
Our School Council has actively supported our work as well including fundraisers, Movie Nights and financial support of our programs. Don’t forget our next council meeting is tomorrow at 7 pm. Come on out even if you have never attended before. We also appreciate a local quartet who dropped by unexpectedly yesterday to serenade our staff for Valentine’s Day! A collaborative and caring community only adds to our overall school climate in positive ways.
What a wonderful time of the year it is thanks to our students, staff and community who make each day great.
And yes…if winter isn’t quite your favorite season, the Blue Jays opened spring training…spring is just around the corner!
